A contradiction so marked of principles: the disputes for the independence of Brazil in the Cisplatine province and the metaphor of slavery (1821-1824)

Abstract:

This article discusses the uses and meanings of the slavery metaphor during Brazil’s independence process. Emphasize the different political projects and conflicts that arose due to the separation between Brazil and Portugal and the plurality of newspapers and pamphlets that emerged in this new conjuncture. Relate this perspective to the debates in these printouts from the Cisplatine province and the questions about the political pacts signed in Río de la Plata and their validity or not through the Brazilian presence. Emphasize that slavery, in its political and social senses, was a fundamental element for the construction of independence from the Brazilian Empire in the conflicts for independence in the region.
