“Oh! Gegê! Come and save us”: popular political propaganda (1945-1953)

Abstract

In this article I try to explore a distinct meaning for political propaganda. This is usuallynoticed in messages produced by governments and spread through mass media. However I intend to show that Getúlio Vargas had the support of many workers who promoted him on their own account through his path from Estado Novo to presidency in 1950. By expressing their political interests, many of them wrote and echoed verses, songs and pamphlets defending his personality and proposals. Such propagandaseems to have contributed to create a sort of public sphere here at the time.

Keywords:
workers; Getúlio Vargas; political propaganda.
