Abstract:
This text proposes to analyze the Law of August 28, 1767, decreed by King José I, as an immediate counterpoint to the papal brief Animarum Saluti, by Clement XIII, which sought to protect the Society of Jesus. By the determinations of this law, it was not only forbidden to comply with the papal document in the kingdom and in the domains, but also the retention and use of the old letters of confraternity acquired by anyone with the Jesuits and, moreover, decreed null the benefit that the unprofessed of fourth vote had to abandon the order, guaranteed by the law of September 3, 1759. As an offshoot of this new law, hundreds of men, identified as egresses, moved from various parts of the empire to Lisbon in order to swear allegiance to the monarch.
