After presenting some of the main works on the subject, the first section of the article discusses recent contributions that have emphasized the connections between slavery and the slave trade in the U.S. South and nineteenth century global capitalism. The second part of the article explores the links between the U.S. interstate slave trade and the transatlantic slave trade to Cuba and, especially, Brazil, with an emphasis on the political tensions generated by them.
