Uses and abuses of tobacco: medical knowledge and the appropriations of tobacco in the Portuguese-Brazilian context of the 18th century

Abstract:

The article has as its theme the medical knowledge produced about tobacco in the Portuguese-Brazilian context of the seventeenth century. Based on impressions of apothecaries, surgeons and physicians, the study seeks to address the forms of tobacco appropriation in Portuguese-Brazilian medicine in the 1700s, in order to understand the medical debate about the therapeutic use of the plant. Based on a reading of these sources, we seek to understand the various ways in which tobacco was appropriated in medicine from the Hippocratic-Galenic tradition and in health manuals translated in Portugal after the 1750s. It’s believed that the analysis carried out here contributes to elucidate not only the circulation of knowledge, but also the singularities of the uses of a plant used in different ways in the cultural universe discussed here.
