Where was the periphery of art? Circulation and reception of European painting copies in Amazonia in the 19th century

Abstract:

This article analyzes the circulation and reception of sacred and religious art in Amazonia in the context of the renewal of Brazilian Catholicism movement in the nineteenth century known as romanization or ultramontanism. For this, it analyzes the iconological program carried out by the Bishop of Pará D. Antônio de Macedo Costa, in particular the replacement of eighteenth-century paintings for nineteenth century ones, according to the new artistic parameters of Roman Catholicism and the global market of art. With this, it seeks to review notions strongly anchored in a hierarchical conception of artistic production, still present in much of the historiography of art, despite the debates in progress in the last decades.

Keywords:
romanization; religious painting; global art.
