Crises of memory in contemporary Europe: 1918, 1945, 1989 and beyond

Abstract:

Crises of memory in contemporary Europe: 1918, 1945, 1989 and beyond introduces the discussions that guided the conception of the dossier of the same title. Under this aspect, it analyses some theoretical dimensions as well as the historiographical debate around the construction of European memories in the twentieth century and its relations with the traumatic events and processes of violence that have characterised the continent’s recent experience. It thus considers memory, in its communicative, cultural and political variants, as well as its central importance for understanding the tensions between a European identity and varied national identities.
