This paper discusses the distinctions and relations between the constitution of a scientific discipline and its institutionalization. Besides presenting the main components of a science, according to the organization of science proposed by Bunge (1980), we also discuss the main elements that distinguish the institutional perspectives of science: the social and the cognitive perspective, based on the contributions of Whitley (1974; 1980). The conclusion includes a table of references on the discussed topics, related to the constitution and the institutionalization of a science.
