The text discusses the issue of internationalization of Portuguese caused by the international repositioning of the CPLP countries in the beginning of the XXI century, the strategy and the internationalization efforts of its management in the wake of the Orthographic Agreement of 1990 and, finally, the place Portuguese may have in more international institutions. Special attention is given to the Brazilian case in the context of a functional multilingualism. The article concludes that it is still underexplored the potential of Portuguese as an instrument for internationalization.
