This paper provides a brief introduction to the field of language policy and planning for those interested in this topic in Brazil. However, it is not a conventional introduction to an academic subject. The aim, in fact, is to reconstruct the "epistemological history" of the field from the early research in the 60's to the most recent publications on the topic. It is hoped that the report of this history will contribute to the consolidation of research in language policy and planning in Brazil.
