The Museo Carlos Gardel in Tacuarembó and the Museo Casa Carlos Gardel in Buenos Aires: nacionalism and disputes over cultural heritage

ABSTRACT

In this article, I analyze the patrimonial activations performed in Uruguay and Argentina for the creation, exhibition and divulgation of the Carlos Gardel museum in Tacuarembó and Casa Carlos Gardel museum in Buenos Aires in the last decade of the twentieth century and the first decade of the XXI. I focus on disputes regarding the national identity of Carlos Gardel. To do this, I use official documentation related to the creation of both museums, related publications and the composition of museum exhibitions, focusing on what was chosen to be presented to the public and what version of the national identity of Gardel and tango are present in these choices.
