ABSTRACT
This article reconstructs the trajectory of physician Ernesto Benedicto Ottoni between 1841 and 1881. Ottoni’s career has thus far received little attention from historians, but his biography highlights important elements of nineteenth-century medical careers. This analysis builds on other studies that discuss the different relationships between medical doctors and imperial society, and argues that Ottoni mobilized various resources to build his spaces of action. These resources included academic recognitions, connections with the State, and familial and social relationships, all of which were inherent aspects of the medical profession during this period.
