ABSTRACT
Vanguard poet who later became a historian and art theorist, cultural mediator between France and Germany, Carl Einstein contributed to several publications, such as Die weißen Blätter, Die Aktion, Das Kunstblatt, and Transition. He was co-editor, together with Georg Grosz, of Der blutige Ernst (1919) and, with Paul Westheim, of Europa-Almanach (1925); along with Georges Bataille, Michel Leiris, Georges Wildenstein, and Georges-Henri Rivière, he was also co-founder of the magazine Documents (1929). He belonged to Daniel-Henry Kahnweiler's circle; he befriended Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque, Juan Gris, and Fernand Léger.
