ABSTRACT
The aim of this article is to present the tensions between the Lusotropicalism endorsed by Salazarism and the scholarly analysis of authors in Africa’s Portuguese territories, particularly Angola. Gilberto Freyre offered rhetorical support for the construction of this new, Lusotropical, vision of the “world that the Portuguese created,” describing Portugal as a territory made up of several ethnicities across multiple continents, corroborating the aesthetics proposed by Salazarism after World War II. However, such an interpretation contrasted with the reality that Angolan intellectuals perceived. Thus, this article analyzes the works of Gilberto Freyre and the responses of Angolan authors with reference to the treatment given by the Portuguese Estado Novo to the “overseas provinces.”
