ABSTRACT
This article aims to analyse Marcello Caetano´s historiographical production about relations between central and local power and the continuities and discontinuities in Portuguese administrative systems. The article emphasizes the role that Marcello Caetano still plays in debates about Portuguese history and historiography, as well as the ways in which his texts address questions of national identities, one de most constant themes among those who investigate the history of Portugal, inside or outside the country.
