“My dear brother”: politics on the letters of D. Maria Teresa and D. Maria Francisca of Braganza

ABSTRACT

The celebrations of the 200th anniversary of the Independence of Brazil give us the chance to revisit this historical moment in all its aspects: events, involved characters, reverberations. If the dynamic between D. Pedro and D. João has already begun to be explored through official documents and correspondence, there is still much to be unveiled within the Royal Family itself. Slowly, with new perspectives and new approaches, possibilities are being opened to know the role played by the infantas daughters of D. João and D. Carlota Joaquina in the political context of Brazil, Portugal and Spain, especially D. Maria Teresa and D. Maria Francisca. In letters that amalgamated the public and the private, the familiar and the political, it is possible to observe the representation of different thoughts, so characteristics of the bustling 19th century.
