Between certainty and doubt: on the origins of cogito in Descartes› work

ABSTRACT:

In most of the interpretations of the work of Descartes (1596-1650) stands the originality of his skeptical proposal. At the same time, another important trait is the radicalism of the questions that comes into play, as well as the central importance of his first principle, on which he bases the foundation of philosophy and the new science, the cogito, a consequence of the refutation of those same hyperbolic doubts. Our interpretation involves a forgotten author, Pierre Charron (1541-1603), whose works have influenced the formation of Cartesian thought. This preacher raised a skeptical wisdom in academic style (and, therefore, related to Stoic notions) that influence the formulation of the Cartesian ideas. In this sense, the certainty of the cogito raises from a skeptical in dispute.
