Abstract:
This article takes up the long discussion between the two main concepts of truth in phenomenology - Husserl's concept of evidence (Evidenz) and Heidegger's concept of discoveredness (Entdecktheit). Arguments are presented against the two prevailing analytical tendencies which, following different paths, have both yielded the conclusion that there is an unbridgeable mutual exclusion between the two concepts. It is argued instead that the two concepts are complementary modes of a broader phenomenon of truth. Finally, the article critically highlights the understanding of history in Heidegger which, it is shown, had a negative impact on a unifying vision of phenomenology.
