The naturalism of Jürgen Habermas and Philip Pettit

Cognitive abilities presupposed by social performances (relations, speeches, interpretations) mean the attribution to human beings of a certain rationality. This rationality can be understood in terms of a type of evolutionary philosophy of history (Habermas), or in terms of the perspective of the philosophy of mind (Pettit). In both perspectives, the type of questioning is almost transcendental in the sense that it is able to reveal the possibility of cognitive operations performed by real actors. Ultimately, the conditions of possibility must be understood as "nature." The question is whether, methodologically, a naturalistic monism is possible, or if a dualism of perspectives would not be indispensable.
