Cities for which people? About the contradictions of the Vale do Anhangabaú reform

Abstract

This article reconstitutes some of the main mediations and conflicts around the most recent project to reform the Vale do Anhangabaú - one of the most expressive and disputed public spaces in São Paulo - to problematize the meanings of certain lexicons incorporated by different urban governances in order to ensure the necessary coalition to carry out the work. The highlight is the concept of the cities for people, propagated by Jan Gehl, Danish architect and urban planner. Based on this objective, it is expected, therefore, to reflect on the following question: for which people would the Vale do Anhangabaú be remodeled? The proposal will be possible from the analysis of documents and publications available through sectors of the São Paulo City Hall; of journalistic reports propagated in different channels; of positions of agents linked to multiple spheres of civil society; in addition to the dialogue with authors linked to urban studies.
