Farewell to the End of History: A Critical Analysis of the crisis of democracy

Abstract

There is currently a certain consensus on the crisis that liberal democracy and its institutions are going through. The article, at first, reviews works that deal with the subject in an attempt to demonstrate its insufficiencies, both in terms of diagnoses and solutions. In a second moment, there is the proposal of a different way of facing the crisis of democracy, a way that Marx envisioned: the categorical-critical way. According to this other perspective, it would be a structural phenomenon, immanent to capitalism itself, not a conjunctural event and related only to the political sphere. We end the article with a scrutiny of Robert Kurz’s works on the subject, an author who continues Marx’s underlined contributions in an attempt to interpret the events of the 20th and 21st centuries.
