The long Italian crisis: socio-economic reforms and trade union conflict

Abstract

The article presents a picture of the main economic and social reforms promoted by Italian governments before and after the 2008 crisis and the neoliberal tendencies that have pervaded both the centre-right and centre-left governments. In this regard we have analysed the difficult relationship of the main Italian trade union with the main reformist left party, also in light of crisis of neo-corporatism model of industrial relations. The union still confirms a high level of adherence which does not always correspond to an equal capacity for mobilization. The strikes in large companies show a net reduction and are constant in the public utilities. The absence of systematic surveys, however, makes it difficult to accurately assess of this form of conflict. Finally, we observe that the tools used by the union have increasingly differed at least with reference to the contrast of economic and social reforms.
