Young Ciganos in secondary education in Portugal: key factors for continuity and school success

Abstract

Despite the fact that in Portugal there are public policies to combat inequalities, including school inequalities, socio-economic origin, gender and ethnic belonging of students continue to have an unavoidable impact on school careers. Ciganos are among the most affected by these inequalities, revealed by the still outstanding rates of early school leaving and school retention and failure. Based on the results derived from semi-directive interviews, the objective of the article is to understand the key-factors that determine the school continuity trajectories of Ciganos in high school. The results reveal young people tending to be more educated than previous generations, highlighting the importance of the family context, but also agency and resilience.
