Popular music in the 1970s and the post-tropicalist scene: analysis of a generation without “life”

Abstract

This article analyzes the Brazilian musical field, in the 1970s, from the perspective of debuting artists in these ten years. Luiz Gonzaga Junior, Luiz Melodia, Novos Baianos, Secos & Molhados, Clube da Esquina, João Bosco, Fagner, Belchior, Sá, Rodrix and Guarabyra, Ivan Lins and Raul Seixas are popular musicians and composers, who emerged artistically after tropicalism, and developed a significant musical production during that decade. Although they are currently known artists, the trajectory of this generation has been little studied and their relevance in the historiography of popular music is still poorly defined. Thus, this article aims to shed light on this generation of newcomers, occupying similar positions in the musical field, in order to understand the configuration of their artistic works and professional careers at the center of the social, economic and cultural transformations that marked the 1970s.
