The ecumenical search for support to followers of Afro-Brazilian cults victimized by intolerance

Abstract

This article approaches the religious intolerance suffered by followers of Afro-Brasilizan cults and the way four ecumenical organizations with national importance have been face the problem. Prepared baed on field research and consultation of documents, the text points out data on increasing aggressive actions by evangelicals in relation to such individuals, something that problematizes the idea of religious pluralismo in Brazil in face of the small non-Christian contingente and the intimidation to worship freedom. The researched organizations, in some way, have widen the unterstanding of ecumenism beyond the Crhristian churches, enphasizing the necessity of defending human rights.
