Open-access Gender violence and national telenovelas: a critical diagnosis

Abstract

This paper presents a diagnosis of the last 19 years of gender violence representations in national telenovelas, thinking these fictional productions in line with the Brazilian socio-legal context of combat women’s violation. It is a critical balance composed by a corpus of 21 telenovelas, which investigates the representations of aggressions against women beyond the facade of social merchandising, that is, the dramatic nuclei that intended to debate and educate about this public problem. In the end, it is shown the sophisticated narrative mechanisms that build and sustain dissident images of gender violence, sometimes interpreted as suffering, other times as necessary punishments.
