PROPOSAL FOR A NEW CONCEPT FOR SUSTAINABLE TOURISM, IN THE LIGHT OF GLOBAL CITIZENSHIP AND SUSTAINTABLE DEVELOPMENT KNOWLEDGE

Abstract:

The correlation between scientific knowledge provides new readings and interpretations of historically constructed concepts. Tourism, as a discipline and phenomenon, requires interdisciplinary debates in order to advance its scientific knowledge. Therefore, the aim of this article is to propose a plural concept for sustainable tourism, based on the intersection between the knowledge of global citizenship and sustainable development. As research methods and techniques, a systematic literature review was carried out in the Web of Science and Scopus databases, as well as an integrative review, based on theories of global citizenship (Biccum, 2020), sustainable development models (Munck & Borim-de-Souza, 2013) and citizen tourism (Gastal & Moesch, 2007). The findings demonstrated the rare links in the scientific literature between global citizenship and sustainable tourism. Those that do exist focus on research carried out in the northern hemisphere, which mainly investigates educational travel in higher education and its consequences for the development of a sense of global citizenship and sustainability. By combining these studies and the theories mentioned above, a biocentric concept for sustainable tourism has been proposed. It is encouraged that further studies adopt interdisciplinarity to corroborate the progression of scientific knowledge of the tourism phenomenon.
