THE RICHNESS OF MINAS GERAIS LANDSCAPES IN THE FILM IN MINAS PROGRAM: CHALLENGES FOR FILM-INDUCED TOURISM

ABSTRACT:

The synergy between tourism and the audio-visual sector has been the focus of studies on “film-induced tourism”. In addition to conventional advertising materials, fiction films or documentaries can also help publicize the locations portrayed on film. This is mainly due to the landscapes represented on the screen, as a tourist attraction that influences the destination image. This article examines how the landscapes of the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais are portrayed in films supported by the program “Programa Filme em Minas”, seeking to identify their potential for film-induced tourism in the State. The methodology of this qualitative investigation included bibliographic research and content analysis of ten films, selected according to previously established criteria. The results showed that these films disseminate natural and urban landscapes, including rural areas, small towns and historical colonial towns. The mountains, an icon of Minas Gerais, were highlighted in almost all the films. Similarly, Belo Horizonte was highlighted in six of the films, showing both the more conventional tourist spots in the capital of Minas Gerais and the peripheral regions of the city - places generally neglected by tourism. In conclusion, although the films analyzed are not committed to the promotion of tourism per se, they nevertheless have the potential to promote tourism in Minas Gerais through the landscapes portrayed in the film settings, favoring a synergy between tourism and audiovisual media.
