Urban Planning, Tourism and Socio-Spatial Segregation: the case of Curva do Lacet, Juiz de Fora, Minas Gerais, Brasil

Abstract:

The objective of this article was to understand the influence of the tourism in the process of Curva do Lacet urban requalification, sited in Juiz de Fora, state of Minas Gerais. Historically, this place has been appropriated by low-income from the neighborhoods Dom Bosco and Teixeiras, as a representative space of meeting and leisure. As of 2006, with the beginning of the implantation process of a shopping center, a commercial building and a high standard hotel, the Curva do Lacet was the target of requalification actions, with aesthetic purposes, which led to the suppression of a soccer field and a playground traditionally used by the residents. The methodological procedures involved bibliographical review, documentary survey and semi-structured interviews with the (re)producing agents of this portion of space. In general, the results indicate that the Curva do Lacet has become an immense urban void, a grassy area with no social function, which prevents its historical frequenters from (re)appropriating or (re)establishing some bond of belonging. The touristic uses, in turn, had their activities intensified in the context of the regional scope shopping center implantation, ended up contributing to the process of urban and social segregation then perceived in the Curva do Lacet.
