SUSTAINABILITY AND HOTELS IN RIO DE JANEIRO: CRITERIA FOR NA INTEGRATED AND PARTICIPATIVE DEVELOPMENT

ABSTRACT:

The debates about sustainable management are currently much in evidence. This perspective is justified by the fact that managers need to deal with: a target-public that is more aware of the limits that will be imposed on the use of natural/cultural resources; and the negative impact of their operations towards the environment and society. This premise is more imperative in activities whose socio-environmental, cultural and economic power of transformation are even more latent, as in the hotel segment. This paper presents procedures, techniques and/or conducts for implementing 39 criteria for promoting a Sustainable Hotel Business. A qualitative study was elaborated, based on multi-case metrics and in-depth interviews. Three hotel managers participated in these interviews - 2 general managers and 1 Human Resources Supervisor - and a representative of the Ministry of Tourism, coordinator of the ISO sustainable tourism group. Based on their experiences, descriptions were structured that can help in the implementation of each criterion, to ensure a holistic, integrated and participative hotel management.
