Urban interventions in Brazilian peripheral areas: a systematic literature review

Abstract

This research aimed to understand the state of the art of academic production for assessment of urban interventions in peripheral areas of Brazilian cities. For this, a systematic literature review was carried out as an analysis methodology, based on the selection, reading and analysis of articles published in Portuguese between 2011 and 2021, and available at the journal portal created by the Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (CAPES), of the Brazilian federal government. The analyzes led to the definition of three study categories, namely: a) State action and real estate speculation; b) public equipment, infrastructure, social housing and mobility; c) teaching practices for architecture and urbanism in peripheral territories. The following results stood out: the role of the State for more equitable city management remains fundamental; the emergence of new urbanization dynamics for areas of environmental interest; the importance of greater university outreach, especially by architecture and urbanism courses, to vulnerable peripheral populations, to improve housing and public spaces. It is hoped that this study can contribute to synthesizing the existing state of the art, bringing this research together and pointing out directions for further investigation.
