Management of metropolitan basins. An approach from the landscape project. Case: del Gato stream, Metropolitan Region of Buenos Aires

Abstract

Historically, the basin management in the Metropolitan Region of Buenos Aires (RMBA) has lacked a comprehensive environmental approach in which rivers and streams are valued from their ecological and landscape potential. In this sense, the idea of landscape that had been spread from the European continent towards the beginning of the 21st century could contribute from a view that integrates nature and culture and articulated with the territorial planning; orientation that has been explored in the doctoral thesis “Landscape fluvial in the Metropolitan Region of Buenos Aires. Assessment and Intervention in the Arroyo del Gato Basin, Gran La Plata “. The present article derives from this thesis, and its main objective is to investigate the possibilities of insertion of the landscape project as a flexible tool within the territorial ordering of the basins of the RMBA, through the development of a case: a river park projected in the basin of the El Gato stream, basin that fulfills the generality of the characteristics of the metropolitan hydrographic system. From the methodological point of view, one works on the analysis of the approaches that allow constructing tools for the approach of the landscape project in the basins of the RMBA, and on the other, on the analysis of the case. It is understood that the landscape can collaborate towards a conception of basins as synthetic units of the environment, promoting the integral treatment of its problems.
