Socioeconomic and demographic inequalities in the cities of Rio Grande do Sul/Brazil: a vulnerability poverty index

Abstract

When individuals are born into families with low income and education level, they are susceptible to reproduce the socio-economic characteristics inherited. With that, this study aims to estimate an index of vulnerability to poverty for the municipalities of Rio Grande do Sul, from the analysis of the number of children whose mothers have low income and education level. To this end, the method of fuzzy inference to the evaluation of the census data of 2010 was used. As a result, there is a difference between the number of births among mothers with low income and other socio-economic groups. Thus, the proportion of children taken by mothers with a low level of education is high for all municipalities. Finally, the estimation of the vulnerability to poverty indicated that about 80% of the municipalities in the State has a high vulnerability, and the rest of the municipalities has been shown to have an average vulnerability to poverty.
