Frontiers and Peripheral State-building: The Case of Fundação Brasil Central

Abstract

This article analyzes the territorial practices of Fundação Brasil Central (1943-1967) in order to discuss state-building in peripheral contexts. By looking at FBC’s reports, letters, and official magazines, I argue that the absence of a clear definition of the boundaries of Central Brazil was central for the process of territorial accumulation FBC was pushing forward. The article focuses on a few selected empirical cases of land conflicts to demonstrate the violent outcomes of this process for the local population and workers.
