Drawing back on press publications as its core research source, this article offers an overview of the introduction and the expansion of photography over the 19th century in the state of Minas Gerais, Brasil. In a very special manner, press advertisements provide valuable information to outline a historical backdrop against which of the work of photography in the province can be understood. We accomplish this task by focusing both on the main characteristics of photography advertising and the specific trajectory of four photographers - Francisco Manoel da Veiga, Guilherme Liebenau, Luiz Costa, Ehrhard Brand.
