The meaning of colors: mulatos and blacks in Brazil and Portugal c. 1640-1750

This article leads to analyze various testimonies from two issues. Initially investigates the hierarchy of skin color, the dichotomy between white/ black and noble/ vile. It then analyzes the innate character of the habits or the ability to inherit the behavior and morals. From this research, we intend to reflect on the social classifications, particularly on the hierarchy of color, and why not, on the idea of race in Portugal and Brazil colony.
