Changing the official language of the Brazilian Annals of Dermatology

Scientific Editor of the Anais Brasileiros de Dermatologia - ABD (Brazilian Annals of Dermatology),

Representing the associate members of the regional office of Rio de Janeiro, we would like to express surprise and displeasure with the resolution for conversion, within a short period of time, of the ABD to an English language journal.

We understand that the idea arose from objectives such as to increase the impact factor and the number of readers of the journal, as well as to better integrate it in the global market. However, we do not believe that values aggregated according to this "technicality" can supplant the respect to the official language of our country or to associate members who have not successfully mastered the English language. In addition, there will certainly be problems with translation and costs.

Although aware of and supporting the independence of the editorial board, we believe that this decision would be best made together with the deliberative council of our society, considering that it causes, at the least, a lot of controversy.

The online journal is currently edited in English and Portuguese. We believe that this bilingual model can be used in the printed publication as it once was. Therefore, people all over the world will be able to read the journal, with no need to exclude our language. We believe this can be solved with political determination of the board of directors of the ABD.

We would like to take this opportunity to express our admiration for your herculean effort and work, in conjunction with the Associated Scientific Editors, who have made the ABD a journal of higher scientific value, both due to the quality and quantity of information.
