Jorge Amado in Romanian: from the Ideological Filter to the Demands of the Free Market

In this article we aim to contextualize Romanian translations of Jorge Amado’s works, considering their chronology and the influences they exert on the Romanian polysystem (Even-Zohar, 1990). Firstly, we present Romanian culture as a “culture of translation” (Baer 2011, p. 10); then we outline a general overview of translations of Brazilian authors into Romanian and propose a chronological classification. In the most consistent part of our work, we present Romanian translations of Jorge Amado’s works and analyze the role they played in translation processes by the ideological filter and the logic of the free market.
