The Department of Orthopedics and Traumatology started its activities in May, 1967 under Prof. Dr. João D. M. B. Alvarenga Rossi leadership. In February, 1975 Dr. Gottfried Köberle took over heading the Department. In December 13th, 1985, along with other Departments, moved to Hospital das Clínicas, at the Universidade Estadual de Campinas campus, and is currently inserted in a metropolitan region of about 5 million population.

Even though several problems involved university teaching, lack of resources for public hospitals and absence of incentive for teaching career, the Department has maintained an important patient assistance service, also contributing to medical formation and specialists and sub-specialists training.

Besides these activities, the Department is nowadays conscious of the importance of the relationship of Orthopedics to other apparently unrelated areas, as Material Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Computing Science. However, it is important not only to be conscious, but to effectively promote a professional interaction; even though "different languages" may be spoken, it is important to speak to each other.

The articles here presented reflect this trend and the thinking we are now experiencing, being sure that this will be the North for the XXI Century.

Prof. Dr. William Dias Belangero

Head Departament of Orthopedics and Traumatology
