Performance of nurses from the Family Health Strategy in the prevention of congenital syphilis: opinion survey in a municipality in the Northeast region

Abstract

Background

Congenital syphilis represents a grievance of considerable intrauterine and perinatal morbidity and mortality, still seen as a serious public health problem. It is a preventable and controllable disease, as long as the infected pregnant woman is diagnosed early and adequate treatment is instituted.

Objective

To know the nurses’ opinion concerning the Family Health Strategy on their role in the prevention of congenital syphilis in the municipality of Sobral, Ceará.

Method

A descriptive study of qualitative approach was carried out in the municipality of Sobral-Ceará, with of nurses ofThe Family Health Strategy centers.. It was used a form to determine the professional profile and semi structured interview was carried out, the answers were analyzed in three thematic categories: the importance of prenatal care; nurses' difficulties and nurses' strategies for the prevention of congenital syphilis. The study followed the ethical principles of Resolution number 466/12.

Results

The main difficulties for the prevention of congenital syphilis were identified as the partner's non-adherence to treatment, social factors and lack of knowledge about the risks of this disease.. The strategies used to prevent the disease were: the active search, the work of the multidisciplinary team, the use of the rapid test for syphilis, and the guidance to pregnant women and their partners.

Conclusion

Nurses assume the responsibility for preventing this disease, however, it is considered that the involvement of other FHS (ESF) professionals is necessary in actions to prevent congenital syphilis.
