Revisiting language education policies in Mozambique: The case of bilingual education

ABSTRACT

I met Marilda Cavalcanti in the 1990s in Mozambique, when the first experience of bilingual education was taking place. The experience involved only two languages, one from the south and the other from the center of the country, out of a total of almost 20 Mozambican languages. With this article I intend to review the trajectory of the educational language policies, of which I was a part, and much contributed to my academic-professional growth through Marilda’s valuable guidance, since the early days of bilingual education in Mozambique and later as my supervisor in the post-graduation course in Applied Linguistics with a specialization in bilingual education.
