In this paper, we consider the discursive process in mass media, specially the way in which minorities are represented in news texts, in the context of the democratisation process in Brazil. It focuses on issues such as discrimination and ways of representation in media discourse, mass media and democracy. Six examples from newspaper texts are analysed in its linguistic aspects and in its relation to the wider social context according to principles of Critical Discourse Analysis.
