Open-access Vocabulary control in the UNESP Thesaurus

Indexing is a practice aimed at information retrieval and is divided into the following processes: analysis, synthesis, and representation. The latter is considered paramount and, to be employed, requires a vocabulary control system, such as a thesaurus. A thesaurus is understood as a specialized system of related terms. It represents the terms identified in the indexing process through vocabulary control. The UNESP Thesaurus aims to control the terms used by its academic community members; however, it presents some issues. Therefore, the goal is to understand the importance of vocabulary control, identify, discuss, and propose improvements. To this end, a literature review was conducted in the LISTA and BRAPCI databases, and the thesaurus was analysed in accordance with the ISO 25964-1 standard and relevant literature. Several problems were identified in the thesaurus, and possible solutions were proposed. It is concluded that the thesaurus is a very important tool and that vocabulary control is vital, with improvements needed in the language tool.
