40 years of the journal Estudos de Psicologia (Campinas)

The journal Estudos de Psicologia (Campinas) was created in December 1983 by the Department of Clinical Psychology at the Institute of Psychology at Pontifical Catholic University of Campinas (PUC-Campinas). The psychology course operated on the central campus of the university and had, at the time, undergraduate and graduate courses in psychology with a concentration area in clinical psychology. It was presented in its first volume by the then director of the Institute of Psychology, Professor Diana Tosello Laloni, as an important action for the dissemination of research and exchange of ideas both among psychologists and among social scientists. Graduate studies in the country were another matter, in addition to the academic-administrative structure of our university. With numerous changes in the national and institutional situation, Estudos de Psicologia (Campinas) arrives today in its 40th volume, in 2023! It has been 40 years publishing psychological science and representing the main issues and challenges in knowledge production in this area.

In Brazil, many journals find it difficult to keep up to date over the years. Difficulties arise for different reasons, and the main one refers to the lack of resources and professionals dedicated to the complex task that involves receiving submissions, assessing proposals, editing and publishing. However, Estudos de Psicologia (Campinas) has a specialized technical team from the university that competently develops the main publishing activities to make it available to the scientific community, with technical and financial support. This is one of the reasons that make our journal an important communication vehicle in the field of psychology.

There are 40 years of great effort to maintain the regularity of its production and the importance of its content for psychological science. Our journal is one of the few psychology journals in the country assessed with maximum quality and a generalist editorial policy, which aims to update undergraduate and graduate training in the most relevant thematic areas.

From the first volume, dated December 1983, to the current one, many changes have been made, from the size to content and format of the journal, to meet current indexing requirements and criteria such as an online and open access publication.

In the first volumes, Estudos de Psicologia (Campinas) published the graduate program faculty production, which was composed of the field of clinical psychology. The journal began modestly – a small booklet with a few articles published, primarily by professors in the graduate psychology program. Over the course of time, and demands for indexing, internationalization and other criteria set by Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (Capes), and with the opening of the school psychology concentration area in 1990, our journal began to seek articles by authors outside the program, thus expanding its circulation nationally.

In the first ten years of the journal (1983 to 1993), Professor Geraldina Porto Witter published a general index with authors and references, presenting some interesting data in her introduction (Estudos de Psicologia, 1994Estudos de Psicologia. (1994). Índice Geral 1983-1993 (v.1/v.10). Instituto de Psicologia da PUCCAMP.). She indicates that many scientific journals die or delay their activities in the first years of their publications, especially today, when the criteria for indexing journals nationally and internationally require a complex infrastructure for their publishing. The authors who published the most in these first ten years were V.L.A. Raposo do Amaral (8), L.F. Lara Campos (7), R.S.L. Guzzo (16), M. Lipp (17), S. Monte Serrat (9), P.R.M. Ribeiro (8), A. Terzis (12) and G. P. Witter (42). Since that production, scientific journals have gradually been disseminated online, which greatly facilitated the expansion of knowledge.

Today, all volumes of the journal are digitized and available on the PUC-Campinas journal portal – from volume 1 to the current 40. From there, it has been possible to analyze the areas that most published in the journal and the important topics of psychology knowledge. As psychology expands into various insertion fields and graduate programs, with an immense variety of articles and themes, Estudos de Psicologia (Campinas) also undergoes diversification. Today, we have a variety of areas to disseminate specific knowledge, as psychology is diverse and circulates through different fields of work, justifying an editorial line that contemplates this diversity of approaches and demands that arise in the different fields where psychology is inserted.
