To refresh the memory of old members and to clarify to new members who have joined SBACV over the past years, I was invited to write a commemorative editorial for the fifth anniversary of J Vasc Br, now J Vasc Bras, and I do it with great joy.

We should initially report how it was born. SBACV had already had two journals before, both created and maintained by people linked to SBACV, but without its interference on their management. SBACV obviously did not feel "being a stepmother, when it could be a mother" of an official publication.

Therefore, in the election process that elected Marcio Leal Meirelles, the most important platform item was the creation of an official journal. SBACV would hold its copyright, responsibility for the editorial line, "profits and losses" originated from it and merits, which would be distributed for all members. I was personally in charge of this mission, being its Editor-in-chief for 40 months. I received continuous support from the Board and from a large number of colleagues in the Editorial Board, reviewers and especially authors. And so I did.

After this introduction, I include the text from the first editorial I wrote when J Vasc Br was launched. It contains all the principles that would guide its management.

For years we have been aware of an inconsistency between the unquestionable scientific weight of the Brazilian Society of Angiology and Vascular Surgery (SBACV) and the reduced number of publications by its members. There are several reasons for this, but this is not the time to list them. On the contrary, this is a moment to celebrate the launch of Jornal Vascular Brasileiro (J Vasc Br). It is time to join efforts to continue a long-term project and, with the creation of J Vasc Br, to ensure that all will have a place to publish their papers, provided they meet the basic requirements of the guidelines for authors and meet with the approval of our reviewers..

For this initial number, we count on invited works. However, since the beginning of this process, we have already received several spontaneous submissions. We expect that we will soon start to receive contributions from vascular surgery residency programs and other graduate programs, with their great potential to produce publishable works. Similarly, we aim at publicizing the materials of vascular surgery services, which have a large tradition in assistance.

Yet another important source of manuscripts will probably be the vascular surgery courses from the several schools of medicine in Brazil, in addition to regional vascular surgery reference centers.

Finally, we also count on the individual contributions of surgeons and practitioners who provide individualized medical assistance but who, along the years, have accumulated a large experience that will be very useful to all of us.

The responsibility of editing J Vasc Br is not restricted to the Editorial Board and to the SBACV Board, which made this publication feasible - rather, it should be viewed as a task to be carried out by all members. Therefore, we would like to invite all of you to engage in this process. J Vasc Br has chosen to follow the Vancouver publication guidelines. Attention to these rules when submitting a paper is very important to simplify the process of selecting and reviewing works. In time, we will seek to list our journal in the most important indexing sources, which we know is a hard task, but we believe not an impossible one. Therefore, we will give special priority to the publication of original articles, which are to constitute more than 50% of our published contents. Case reports will be limited in the print version, but soon there will be an alternative space for publication of interesting case reports.

J Vasc Br will try to publish all official SBACV Forums. In the current issue, we feature our first SBACV forum, available in Portuguese. This forum was coordinated by Professors Pedro Puech Leão and Solange S. M. Evangelista. We will also publish international guidelines and consensus-type articles about subjects of broad interest. Along these lines, we have already received authorization to publish the recently released international guidelines onPrevention of venous thromboembolism,. kindly forwarded to us by Professor A. Nicolaides thanks to the special engagement of our colleague Dr. Márcio Castro e Silva, to whom J Vasc Br is grateful, and from whom we hope to receive other similar contributions.

Another important innovation is the translation into English and publication on the Internet of all articles from the print version. This will allow our contributors to more easily make their work known worldwide. The online version of J Vasc Br will also have room for case reports. In addition, those authors who wish to see their work in English in the printed version are welcome to submit their manuscripts in that language.

It is important to emphasize that the current SBACV Board views J Vasc Br as an investment, and because of that the journal will be distributed free of charge, not only to members but also to colleagues from other related fields, with the objective of making our specialty better known and valued. Therefore, please remember to recommend and send us the address of at least two colleagues from other areas that you believe will be interested in reading J Vasc Br so that we can include them in our mailing list.

Finally, I would like to thank all the members of the Editorial Board who have agreed to donate their time and work to ensure the success of this endeavor, and all SBACV members, who will raise J Vasc Br to the standards of our Society by making it one of the best publications in its field.

Forty months later, I am no longer the Editor, but I help by providing my support and active participation, as an author and reviewer.

Now that the child is able to walk alone, it it the time to consolidate J Vasc Bras, being careful to maintain editorial freedomfar from corporate control and close to members' and patients' interests..

My words have always been and will always be an encouragement to each member and each service to participate in the editorial process, by submitting their studies to value J Vasc Bras and promote its growth.

I conclude being certain that all SBACV members can feel proud of the seed that has been planted and germinated, became a tree and now must achieve its full consolidation with the help of everyone.
