This article revisits the debate on universalism and cultural relativism applied to human rights, seeking to upgrade it from situations that have been verified in recent decades in certain parts of the world, including Brazil. It assumes the defense of contingent relativism under the influence of the American philosopher Richard Rorty. It concludes with the application of the perspective of sentimental education, developed by the referred philosopher, in recent statements of Brazilian parliamentarians Jair Bolsonaro and Marco Feliciano.
