EDITORIAL

The Revista Brasileira de Epidemiologia (RBE) has started its tenth volume this year, 2007, and has achieved major accomplishments, as a result of the hard work and efforts made by our former editor and current chairman of ABRASCO, Prof. José da Rocha Carvalheiro, by the deputy and associate editors, the RBE's Executive Secretary, and, of course, with the trust deposited by the Brazilian scientific community in this team led by him by submitting its production to this journal. It is possible to see, without a shadow of doubt, that the Revista has found its place in the scenario of technical-scientific journals and community, by its indexing by LILACS and SCiELO, and because it has become an additional reference for the vast and growing Brazilian epidemiological production.

Everyone is aware of the current situation, especially regarding professor Carvalheiro's assuming ABRASCO presidency, which forced a reorganization of the Board of Editors. In turn, the Board of Directors and the Epidemiology Commission of ABRASCO agreed to appoint the authors of this editorial as the new Scientific Editors.

The honorable task assigned to us is not simple neither easy. There are challenges, the first of them being to replace our competent Carvalheiro and to perform the tasks with equal dedication and success. The second challenge is the long and arduous journey that lies ahead, of maintaining the virtuous improvement process of the journal. Continuing the work done so far, the first and most immediate task is to include this journal in MEDLINE. We have already advanced considerably toward meeting the requirements for its indexing and, in the near future, we should comply with the Current Contents system, which recently contemplated the brilliant work developed by the editors of its sibling-journal Cadernos de Saúde Pública, to whom we extend our congratulations. The other challenges are to try to expand the publication space, increasing the frequency of issues and creating conditions to expedite even further the progress of reviews and respective indications for publication. In this manner, we intend to solidify our accomplishments and, more than that, to ensure that the RBE continues being a safe tool for the community to express its fruitful dissemination and spreading of knowledge in the area of Epidemiology.

This is also a very timely moment to promote, in absolute agreement with the Epidemiology Commission and ABRASCO's Board, the reorganization of the Board of Editors, and, along with the maintenance of the existing sections, to foster debates and the historical recovery of the articles so kindly called by professor Carvalheiro "gavetas e prateleiras" ("drawers and shelves").

The proximity of the Brazilian and the International Congresses of Epidemiology, scheduled for next year, also encourages us to make an effort to reach the targets mentioned above. We count on the indispensable trust and collaboration of our community for these meetings, so that we will have an important source of products to value and honor more and more Brazilian Epidemiology.
