Instructional material on the management of altered speech related to velopharyngeal dysfunction Dutka, Jeniffer de Cássia Rillo Prearo, Gabriela Aparecida Polzin, Ana Caroline Zentil Corrêa, Camila de Castro Pegoraro-Krook, Maria Inês Maximino, Luciana Paula

Resumo em Inglês:

ABSTRACT Purpose: to develop and evaluate an instructional material addressing steps and strategies in speech-language therapy for the treatment of speech disorders related to velopharyngeal dysfunction (VPD). Methods: a research taking place in three phases: 1) Planning and development of the material; 2) Evaluation of the material by speech-language therapists; and 3) Application of the material to undergraduate students of Speech-Language Therapy followed by an assessment of their understanding of the topic before and after viewing the material. Inferential statistics were presented by applying the Wilcoxon test to compare responses before and after exposure to the material, considering the level of significance less than or equal to p<0.05. Results: the content of the modules included: Velopharyngeal function during speech and VPD; Velopharyngeal sufficiency; Training of “modified breath and plosion” in speech; Training with sounds; and Tips for conducting speech-language therapy. In the second phase, five speech-language therapists evaluated the material from satisfactory to excellent, making suggestions that helped to improve it. As to the third phase, the average percentage of correct answers presented a significant increase of 23% after the students viewed the material (p=<0.001). Conclusion: the instructional material had its content and format evaluated from satisfactory to excellent by professionals; viewing by undergraduate students of Speech-Language Therapy increased their knowledge on the subject.

Occurrence of risk for hearing loss in infants with congenital syphilis: A cross-sectional study using automatic auditory brainstem response Aguiar, Livia Barbosa Cunha, Brenda Karla Silva da Bezerra, Mylena Brito, Maria Edinilma Felinto de Arrais, Nívia Moore, David R Balen, Sheila Andreoli

Resumo em Inglês:

ABSTRACT Purpose: to study the occurrence of risk for hearing loss in infants with congenital syphilis, using automatic auditory brainstem response. Methods: a prospective cross-sectional study. Automatic auditory brainstem response was performed nine to 60 days after leaving the hospital. The sample included infants exposed to syphilis- infants of mothers who underwent the current best practice treatment for syphilis, during the prenatal period, after testing positive for the disease, using the Venereal Diseases Research Laboratory (VDRL) exam (Exposed group); Congenital syphilis group: infants and mothers who received syphilis treatment during the perinatal period, following a positive VDRL result at birth; Control group: infants of mothers with a negative VDRL result. None of the infants had other hearing loss risk indicators. Analysis was based on binary pass/failure in automatic auditory brainstem response. Results: in the Exposed group, 100% passed the test bilaterally. In the Congenital syphilis group, 97% passed the test for the right ear and 94% for the left ear. In the Control group, 96% passed the test for the right ear and 94% for the left ear. Conclusion: neither exposure or congenital syphilis were indicators of a higher occurrence of risk for hearing, during the first two months of life.

ABSTRACT Purpose: to investigate the use of technology by early childhood education teachers in teaching before and during the COVID-19 pandemic, highlighting how they faced the challenges of remote classes. Methods: a primary, observational, and cross-sectional study with convenience sampling and descriptive and inferential statistical analysis. 794 teachers from public and private schools answered a questionnaire about the situations experienced before and during the pandemic. The McNemar and Wilcoxon tests were used, and the level of statistical significance considered was less than 5% (p<0.05). Results: most of the responses were from public school teachers. The use of non-tangible technological resources was not part of the participants' routine, and 83.2% had difficulty using them during the pandemic. 91.9% had difficulty monitoring their children's progress, virtually, and dealing with different family contexts. Conclusion: the social isolation imposed by the pandemic led to the use of non-tangible technologies through resources that were not developed for educational purposes. The lack of equipment in the home environment and the lack of knowledge about the use of technological resources were the most decisive difficulties. Although most schools and city governments made platforms and programs available for classes, few had the necessary training. Monitoring children's progress virtually was challenging, as was dealing with the activities proposed for home, considering the different family contexts.

ABSTRACT Purpose: to analyze possible interferences of face masks on teachers’ sensation of vocal effort, voice use, self-reported vocal quality, and vocal signs and symptoms. Methods: an observational cross-sectional study with 212 teachers (175 women; 37 men; mean age of 47 years), working at different education levels. They were contacted from the database of a previous study and completed an online questionnaire upon returning to in-person classes during the COVID-19 pandemic. Association analyses between aspects of mask use and other variables were performed using Fisher's exact test, Kruskal-Wallis H test, and Student's t test, with a 5% significance level. Results: 85% of participants wore masks in class, mainly surgical and FFP2/N95 ones. They reported increased vocal effort, difficulty in being understood, general fatigue, and the need to speak louder; 54% removed the mask to facilitate communication. Those who did not wear a mask had worse vocal quality and more hoarseness. The mask type was not relevant; reporting negative interference from the mask was associated with vocal signs and symptoms. Conclusion: the mask interfered with these teachers’ communication, further hindering occupational voice use where the occurrence of dysphonia is already high.

ABSTRACT Purpose: to analyze the development of oral motor skills of premature babies in their first 2 years of life and relate them to growth. Methods: a longitudinal study conducted in a hospital in Southern Brazil with 40 premature babies at birth and 4, 6, 12, 18, and 24 months of corrected age. Anthropometric and oral motor skills were assessed using the Schedule for Oral Motor Assessment. Mean and standard deviation were used to describe the distribution of variables. The comparison between study variables was performed using Student's t-test. Statistical significance was set at ≤ 0.05. Results: the mean gestational age at birth was 32.47 weeks. The corrected age at 4 months was 3.37 months, and 82.5% of the sample was already receiving complementary feeding and had oral motor dysfunction, which later evolved to normal. Growth was significantly associated with oral motor function for solid food at 12 months. Children with normal oral motor functions had better Z scores for weight-for-age, weight-for-height, and body mass index-for-age than those with oral motor dysfunction. Conclusion: oral motor dysfunction predominated in preterm babies at 4 months of corrected age. However, at 6 months of corrected age, preterm babies already had adequate oral motor function for different food consistencies and maintained favorable evolution in this skill until the end of the second year of corrected age. Babies with adequate oral motor function had better growth indicators at 12 months, justifying early speech-language-hearing intervention in preterm babies’ oral skills.

ABSTRACT Purpose: to synthesize the literature on the influence of ableism on the social inclusion of people presented with disabilities. Methods: this qualitative integrative review employed the acronym SPIDER to develop the central question. The articles were searched across seven information sources, utilizing a search strategy that incorporated descriptors and their respective synonyms. The articles located were entered into the Rayyan application, initially analyzing them by excluding duplicates and reading titles and abstracts. The ones selected were read in full. Following the inclusion criteria, 17 articles were defined and remained in the review. The results were analyzed qualitatively. Literature Review: ableism is a form of oppression, preventing people from participating in society and exercising their rights. Functioning must be emphasized in contrast to capacity, and the identity of people with disabilities must be valued by using appropriate language and attitudes, without stereotypes. Conclusion: ableist conceptions and attitudes cause distancing, segregation, and exclusion of people with disabilities, making it difficult to include them effectively in society.
