Alterity, justice and the person in Lévinas: reflections from covid-19 or the pandemic from the same

Abstract

The article analyzes the concept of alterity in Emmanuel Lévinas' philosophy. Such analysis takes into account the scenario unveiled by the Covid-19 pandemic in Brazil. The research problem that guides the investigation can be summarized as follows: in what way can Levinasian alterity and the alteristic justice open new ethical readings in the face of the pandemic resulting from Covid-19? The hypothesis that will be tested throughout this work is that the difficulty in establishing otherness stems from the construction of reality itself based on the Self. The general objective is to establish an analysis between the pandemic and otherness. The specific objectives, which are reflected in the structure of the article in two sections, are: to analyze the concept of Levinasian otherness, and verifying how this concept can enable new ethical readings of the Covid-19 phenomenon. The method used in the work is the phenomenological one, in order to emerge with a better design the analysis of the subjective perception triggered by social phenomena, especially the Self in relation to the Other in the Levinasian reading. At the end of the work, the results point to the need for a reflection about the philosophical and legal structures as a condition for the possibility of alterity.
