Moléstias venéreas entre estudantes universitários do sexo masculino: um estudo retrospectivo

A group of 236 male medical students in their three first years of school, were interrogated as to venereal disvases adquired during that period. The most common infection was Gonorrhoea, presenting an annual incidence of 119 per thousand in those living with their parents, and of 153 per thousand among those living in "republics" (dormitories managed by the students themselves). While this has been a retrospective study, based upon Information gathered through personal interview, the authors believe those data to be sufficiently accurate to exclude other causes of urethritis. The same group presents 5 cases of syphilis during this period of time, as well as 9, 7 and 10 cases respectively of condylomata acuminata, chancroid and non-especific urethritis. Antibiotic therapy was entirely unorthodox in the majority of cases, as were inefficient the prophilactic procedures employed by the students. The authors are optimistc as far as future action for the control of venereal diseases is concemed, at least in similar enmronments, the atitude of these students being sufficiently mature to warrant a hopeful outlook.
